A full day is dedicated to exploring the heart of Tsavo West, with game drives covering different parts of
the park. The day may begin with a drive through the Ngulia area, where leopards are often seen and
birds of prey circle above. This region is also known for its dramatic hills and rocky outcrops that offer
excellent wildlife viewing points. A key highlight of the day is a visit to Mzima Springs, a clear freshwater
oasis fed by underground streams from the Chyulu Hills. A guided walk leads to a viewing platform and
underwater chamber, where hippos, crocodiles, and fish can be observed in their natural habitat. The
peaceful setting of Mzima Springs, with its palm-lined pools and abundant birdlife, offers a refreshing
contrast to the drier parts of the park.
From there, you may travel toward the Shetani Lava Flow, a massive field of solidified black lava formed
by a historic volcanic eruption. The haunting, moon-like landscape tells the story of Tsavo’s geological
past and offers panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. Further exploration may include a visit to
the Rhino Sanctuary, where conservation efforts are underway to protect the endangered black rhino.
Though sightings can be rare due to thick vegetation, the sanctuary plays a crucial role in species
preservation.
The day concludes with a slow drive back toward your lodge, with more opportunities for wildlife
sightings along the way. As the sun sets over the savannah and hills, the atmosphere becomes peaceful
and magical — the perfect end to a day of discovery.
