Where Does Gorilla Trekking Happen in Uganda?
The are two Major Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Uganda;
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
The Misty Jungle of Bwindi National park is the oldest and most visited national park in Uganda. It is
home to half of the total mountain Gorillas in the world, numbering over 500 Individuals in over 19
families. This is recognized as A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The four Sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable
National park are Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga. The trekking session starts at 7am, for
approximately 2-8 hours, plus one extra hour for watching the mothers nurse her young ones; the
supervision of the Silverback and lots more. Once with the Apes, you have an extra hour to watch the
Apes play and feed.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park-Where Silver Meets Gold
Mgahinga Gorilla national park is Smaller but equally magical. Located in the south western part of
Uganda; this is one of the 5 national parks in the world with the Mountain Gorillas. It is Part of the larger
Virunga Conservation Area, often less crowded and a great option for travelers seeking a quieter
experience. It is home to two gorilla families, and up to 8 people can Track a family in a day.
The gates open at 7am, with a 30 minute pretrekking briefing, and thereafter ultimate Hike that lasts for
roughly 1-8 hours plus an hour of watching Apes play, move and feed.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permits, Packing List & Cost
To track the Gorillas, everyone is expected to carry a valid Gorilla trekking permit Issued by Uganda
Wildlife Authority through a registered Tour Operator. As of June 2024-2026, Permit Cost (Uganda):$800
USD per person, UGX 250,000 for East African Citizens, and USD 700 for foreign residents. Permits sell
out months in advance, especially in peak seasons (June–Sept & Dec–Feb). Book early by paying 100% of
the booking fee. Here are a few items to pack for your life time adventure; Long-sleeved shirt & pants
(to protect from nettles/insects), Waterproof hiking boots, Gloves (to grip branches & avoid thorns),
Rain jacket or poncho, Reusable water bottle, Snacks & energy bars, Professional Camera (no flash
photography allowed) and Gaiters or long socks (to keep ants out)

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and How to Get there
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the best times are during the dry seasons: June to
September and December to February. These months offer more reliable weather and easier hiking
conditions. However, rain can fall any time in the rainforest — be prepared regardless of the season.
How to Get There Is either by road on a journey of over 8–10 hours from Kampala or Entebbe to
Bwindi/Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. By air; Domestic flights are available from Entebbe to Kihihi or
Kisoro Airstrip, cutting travel time significantly.
