21 Days Tanzania Grand Circuit Safari
21 DaysOverview
This 21-day journey is the most comprehensive safari experience Tanzania has to offer. You’ll traverse
the country’s three major safari circuits—starting with the iconic Northern Circuit (Tarangire,
Ngorongoro, Serengeti), transitioning into the remote Western Circuit (Katavi, Mahale Mountains), and
concluding in the wild heart of the Southern Circuit (Ruaha, Nyerere/Selous). Expect front-row seats to
the Great Migration, close encounters with chimpanzees, and unfiltered predator-prey drama in some of
the most unspoiled habitats on the continent. Along the way, you’ll stay in handpicked lodges and
tented camps, experience various modes of safari—from game drives and walking safaris to boat cruises
and forest treks—and enjoy a rhythm that balances exploration with moments of serenity. For
passionate wildlife lovers and those who want to go far beyond the average safari, this trip delivers the
very best of Tanzania. The Trip starts and Ends in Arusha
Touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your personal guide from Neste Uganda Safaris
Ltd. will greet you and transfer you to your lodge in Arusha. This peaceful town lies at the foot of Mount
Meru and serves as the ideal base for your grand adventure. Settle into your accommodation and take
the rest of the day to unwind. Depending on your arrival time, you might explore local shops or relax in
the lodge gardens. Your guide will give you a detailed briefing on the incredible journey ahead.
Begin your journey with a drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its large elephant herds, ancient
baobab trees, and its seasonal swamps that attract a wealth of wildlife during the dry season.
Enjoy an afternoon game drive in the park, where you might encounter lions on the hunt, leopards in
trees, and a wide variety of bird species. The Tarangire River acts as a lifeline in the dry months, pulling
in animals from miles around, making this a rewarding introduction to the Tanzanian wilderness.
After a morning game drive in Tarangire, continue to Lake Manyara National Park, a compact but diverse
park famed for its tree-climbing lions, hot springs, and dense groundwater forests.
Explore the lakeshore where flamingos, pelicans, and hippos abound, and keep your eyes peeled for
baboons, monkeys, and forest-dwelling elephants. The landscapes here shift rapidly—from lush jungle
to open floodplains—making for dramatic backdrops and exciting photography.
After breakfast, enjoy a cultural tour in Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant village home to over 120 Tanzanian
ethnic groups. You’ll visit local farms, banana plantations, and artisan markets, gaining insight into daily
life and traditions.
Later, drive into the Ngorongoro Highlands, with its cool air and rolling hills. Settle into your lodge on or
near the crater rim, and take in sweeping views of the landscape below. You’ll enjoy a hearty dinner and
prep for your descent into the crater tomorrow.
Descend early into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera and a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. Its rich volcanic soil supports an incredible density of wildlife, including the Big Five:
lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.
Spend the full day exploring the crater floor, from the hippo-filled pools to the Lerai forest and open
grasslands. This is one of the best places in Africa to see black rhinos, and predator sightings are
frequent. Enjoy a picnic lunch in this wildlife-rich natural amphitheater.
Depart Ngorongoro and drive into the legendary Serengeti, stopping at Olduvai Gorge, one of the most
significant paleoanthropological sites in the world. Here, you’ll learn about early human evolution
before continuing into the park. As you enter the Serengeti, game viewing begins immediately.
Depending on the season, you may witness part of the Great Migration—thousands of wildebeest and
zebras moving in search of water and pasture. Overnight in a central Serengeti camp.
Today is dedicated to exploring the vast plains of the Serengeti, a place teeming with life year-round.
Your guide will plan the route based on seasonal animal movements to give you the best wildlife
encounters. Look for lions resting under acacias, cheetahs scanning for prey, and elephants wandering
through the grass. If the migration is in your region, expect river crossings, newborn calves, or predator
ambushes—depending on the time of year.
After breakfast, fly west to Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania’s most remote and least-visited parks.
You’ll land on a dirt airstrip in what feels like the middle of nowhere—true African wilderness.
This park is home to huge buffalo herds, dense hippo populations, and active lion prides. After settling
in, enjoy an afternoon game drive in a landscape of floodplains, palm-studded grasslands, and acacia
woodlands. The isolation here guarantees a quiet, exclusive safari.
Spend a full day on safari in Katavi, often without seeing another vehicle. The dry season draws
thousands of animals to the remaining waterholes, where predator-prey interactions play out in
dramatic fashion. You’ll witness hippos piled into shrinking pools, crocodiles basking on mudbanks, and
elephants dust bathing under baobabs. This is wild Africa, untamed and authentic—perfect for seasoned
travelers and wildlife photographers.
This morning, join a professional ranger on a walking safari, a thrilling way to learn about the bush up
close. Track wildlife on foot, identify plants and animal prints, and discover the hidden layers of the
ecosystem. After lunch, head out for a relaxed sunset game drive, focusing on hyenas, nocturnal birds,
and lions beginning their evening hunt. Back at camp, enjoy a fireside dinner under the stars,
accompanied by the distant calls of the wild.
Today, fly to Mahale Mountains National Park, accessible only by boat along the shores of Lake
Tanganyika. Upon arrival, transfer to your lodge by dhow or motorboat, with forested mountains rising
behind you. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the lake, swimming in pristine waters, or birdwatching
along the shore. Mahale’s blend of beach and rainforest is magical and peaceful—a unique setting for
the next chapter of your safari.
After breakfast, embark on your first chimpanzee trekking experience. Hike through dense forest with
expert trackers who lead you to a habituated troop of wild chimpanzees. Spend one unforgettable hour
observing their social interactions—grooming, playing, foraging, and communicating. After returning to
camp, enjoy a refreshing swim or a kayak trip along the lake’s calm shoreline.
Venture into the forest again for your second trek. With luck, you’ll witness different aspects of chimp
behavior and perhaps see other wildlife such as bushbucks, red colobus monkeys, and hornbills. The
afternoon is yours to relax or explore further—take a walk to a nearby waterfall, enjoy some fishing, or
simply soak up the serenity of this unique environment, completely off the tourist trail.
Enjoy a slower-paced day to rest and soak in the lake's beauty. Optional activities include kayaking,
fishing, or a short hike to panoramic viewpoints. You can also interact with local fishermen or visit a
nearby village for cultural immersion. Mahale offers a rare opportunity to truly disconnect. There’s no
Wi-Fi or roads—just the rhythm of nature and the peaceful sounds of the lake and forest. A perfect
recharge before continuing your journey.
Depart Mahale and fly southeast to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest and most predator-rich park.
Upon arrival, take a game drive en route to your lodge, spotting giraffes, elephants, and impalas. Ruaha
is known for its rugged beauty, dramatic baobab-studded landscapes, and diverse wildlife. Your first
evening in camp offers a chance to listen to the calls of lions and leopards as night falls.
Today is a full day exploring Ruaha, renowned for its high predator density and diverse terrain. Your
game drive takes you through river systems, rocky escarpments, and open plains. Look out for lions,
cheetahs, leopards, and wild dogs, often seen in action. Ruaha is also home to large herds of elephants
and buffalo, as well as rare antelopes like roan, sable, and lesser kudu. Bird lovers will appreciate the
park’s 570+ species. Break for a picnic lunch in the bush before continuing your exploration. The
landscapes here are raw, rugged, and hauntingly beautiful.
Start your day with a guided walking safari, a safe but thrilling way to experience the bush on foot. Your
guide will help you track animals, read spoor, and understand the smaller details of the ecosystem—like
medicinal plants and bird calls. After lunch and a rest at the lodge, head out again for a sundowner game
drive, with golden light painting the baobabs and plains. Stop at a scenic viewpoint to enjoy a drink as
the sun sets over the wilderness, then return to camp for dinner under the stars.
This morning, board a light aircraft and fly to Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the vast Selous
Game Reserve. After settling in, enjoy a boat safari on the Rufiji River, where crocodiles bask and hippos
grunt in the shallows. A river safari is a completely different perspective—you’ll see elephants drinking,
birds nesting, and possibly even predators coming for a sip at the shoreline. It’s peaceful and dramatic at
once, and a fantastic way to ease into this new ecosystem.
Head out for a full-day game drive in Nyerere, which boasts one of Africa’s largest populations of lions
and wild dogs. The terrain is a mix of savannah, miombo woodlands, and wetlands, offering incredible
wildlife diversity. Keep an eye out for giraffes, zebras, kudu, eland, and plenty of birdlife—including fish
eagles and bee-eaters. You'll enjoy a bush picnic lunch and spend the day in solitude—this park remains
off-the-beaten-track, ensuring intimate, uncrowded wildlife encounters.
Begin your day with a sunrise walking safari, a perfect time to see animals at their most active and
appreciate the park’s smaller wonders—dung beetles, antlion traps, and colorful butterflies. Return to
camp for a leisurely breakfast and free time. In the afternoon, enjoy another optional boat safari, a short
game drive, or simply relax at your lodge overlooking the river or lake, reflecting on your journey
through Tanzania’s finest wilderness.
After breakfast, take a short flight back to Arusha, where you’ll be transferred to a lodge for lunch or day
room use depending on your flight schedule. If time permits, you may visit a local craft market or
cultural center.
