18 Days Kenya Safari.
18 DaysOverview
This 18-day Kenya safari is a rich exploration of the country’s most diverse landscapes — from
Samburu’s arid north to Marsabit’s forested crater lakes, Laikipia’s innovative conservancies, the rhino-
rich central highlands, and the bird-filled Rift Valley lakes. You’ll see the Big Five and the Samburu
Special Five, walk among giraffes, visit vibrant tribal communities, and experience the drama of the
Maasai Mara and the majesty of Amboseli elephants beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey can end
with a return to Nairobi or an optional beach holiday on the Indian Ocean coast — the perfect blend of
wildlife, culture, and relaxation.
Welcome to Kenya! Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you’ll be met by a
representative and transferred to your hotel in Nairobi. Depending on arrival time, optional excursions
include the Giraffe Centre (to hand-feed endangered Rothschild giraffes), the David Sheldrick Elephant
Orphanage, or a Nairobi National Park game drive, where lions roam with a city skyline backdrop.
Evening at leisure.
Depart early heading north past Mount Kenya, crossing the equator at Nanyuki. Arrive in the arid
Samburu region — strikingly different from southern Kenya — with dramatic landscapes of rocky
outcrops, acacia bush, and the Ewaso Nyiro River. On your afternoon game drive, expect to see the rare
Samburu Special Five: Gravy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the long-necked
gerenuk. Lions, leopards, elephants, and crocodiles also thrive here.
Explore the reserve in depth with morning and afternoon game drives. Samburu is known for excellent
leopard sightings, large elephant herds, and vibrant birdlife (over 450 species). Along the river, spot
kingfishers, bee-eaters, and hornbills. Midday, return to camp to relax, and later visit a Samburu village
to experience semi-nomadic pastoralist culture, traditional beadwork, and dances.
Drive further north through remote desert country to Marsabit — a cool, misty mountain rising from the
surrounding desert. Visit the forested Marsabit National Park, home to Lake Paradise, an extinct crater
with water year-round. Wildlife is elusive but includes forest elephants, buffalo, greater kudu, and
leopard. The crater often hosts hundreds of doves and soaring raptors. Stay in a basic lodge or
community-run camp.
Head south to the Laikipia Plateau, a conservation hotspot of private and community-run conservancies.
Arrive at your eco-lodge in time for lunch and a bush walk or camel safari with Samburu guides. Wildlife
includes endangered Grevy’s zebra, wild dogs, eland, and black rhinos. Unlike national parks, Laikipia
allows activities like night drives, walking safaris, and community visits.
Enjoy flexible activities tailored to your interests: track wildlife on foot, visit a local school, or join
rangers on patrol. Morning and evening game drives often reveal lions, elephants, and hyenas.
Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting species like the Hartlaub’s turaco or Verreaux’s eagle. Laikipia is a
model for community conservation, offering rich insights into sustainable tourism.
Short drive to Ol Pejeta, a leading conservation area and rhino sanctuary. On arrival, visit the
Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (the only place in Kenya where chimps can be seen) and track both
black and white rhinos. Game drives may reveal lions, elephants, cheetahs, and buffalo. Optional
activities include lion tracking, horse-riding among wildlife, or visiting the endangered northern white
rhinos under guard.
Morning and afternoon game drives through varied savannah, bush, and riverine habitat. Ol Pejeta is
also excellent for spotting jackals, warthogs, and baboons, with consistent Big Five sightings. Optional
night drive reveals nocturnal creatures such as bush babies, aardvarks, and servals. End your day with
sundowners overlooking Mount Kenya.
Drive to Aberdare National Park, a lush, forested mountain range. After lunch at Aberdare Country Club,
transfer to a tree lodge like The Ark or Treetops. These lodges overlook salt licks and floodlit waterholes,
offering rare sightings of forest elephant, giant forest hogs, bushbuck, and even leopards at night, all
from the comfort of your viewing deck.
Descend into the Rift Valley and drive to Lake Nakuru, a UNESCO-listed park known for its rhinos and
birdlife. Afternoon game drive reveals white and black rhinos, waterbuck, baboons, and Rothschild
giraffes. Flamingos (seasonal) and pelicans dot the soda lake. Lions and leopards also reside here, often
seen lounging in fever trees or near the water.
After breakfast, continue to Lake Baringo, a freshwater lake in the arid north Rift region. Known for
incredible birdwatching (over 500 species), including fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers. Optional boat
trip offers close views of hippos, crocodiles, and fish eagles snatching prey from the water. In the
evening, enjoy a guided bird walk or visit a local Njemps fishing village.
Drive south to Lake Naivasha, surrounded by flower farms and volcanic hills. After lunch at a lakeside
lodge, take a boat ride to see hippos and water birds or walk on Crescent Island among free-roaming
giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and impalas — a great opportunity for close wildlife photography on foot.
Depart for the Maasai Mara, Kenya’s top safari destination and home to the Great Migration
(July–October). Arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive. Begin spotting elephants, lions,
buffalo, giraffes, and perhaps even your first cheetah or leopard. Sunset on the Mara plains is magical.
Spend the day tracking wildlife with expert guides. Big cats are abundant, and the river crossings (in
season) are dramatic with crocodiles and wildebeest battles. Other sightings may include hyenas,
jackals, hippos, and large elephant herds. Optional sunrise hot air balloon safari followed by a bush
breakfast.
Another day to explore deeper into the Mara Triangle or northern conservancies. Visit a Maasai village
to learn about their cattle culture and traditional dances. Relax during the heat of the day, then enjoy a
final sunset game drive and sundowner on the savannah.
Early drive to Amboseli via Nairobi. Arrive by mid-afternoon and enjoy sweeping views of Mount
Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak. Game drive through the park’s marshes, where elephants wade
through swamps and lions stalk prey across open plains.
Morning and afternoon game drives in Amboseli varied landscapes: dry lakebeds, wetlands, and acacia
woodland. This park is famed for its iconic elephant herds and views of Kilimanjaro on clear mornings.
Look for cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, buffalo, and abundant birdlife, including flamingos, herons, and
secretary birds.
After breakfast, enjoy a final short game drive en route to the airstrip or drive back to Nairobi. You may
catch an evening flight home or connect to a domestic flight to Mombasa, Diani, or Watamu for a
relaxing beach extension on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast.
