15 Days Ultimate Tanzania Safari: Northern, Western & Southern Circuit
15 DaysOverview
This immersive 15-day itinerary is the ultimate Tanzanian safari experience, taking you through the
country’s most iconic and remote wilderness areas. You’ll begin in the legendary Northern Circuit,
visiting Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti, where classic African game viewing unfolds across
endless savannahs. Next, venture west to Katavi and Mahale Mountains, home to massive buffalo herds
and wild chimpanzees on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Finally, head south to explore the pristine,
predator-rich parks of Ruaha and Nyerere National Park (Selous), where exclusivity and untamed beauty
define every moment. From game drives and walking safaris to chimpanzee trekking and river cruises,
this is a once-in-a-lifetime journey through the very best of Tanzania—crafted and guided by the expert
team at Neste Uganda Safaris Ltd. Each destination offers a unique rhythm, wildlife density, and
atmosphere, ensuring every day is unforgettable.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where a representative from Neste Uganda Safaris Ltd. will
greet you and transfer you to your lodge in Arusha. Surrounded by coffee plantations and with views of
Mount Meru, Arusha serves as the perfect starting point for your journey across Tanzania. Settle in and
relax after your international flight. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy the peaceful lodge
gardens, take a short city tour, or simply unwind and prepare for the adventures ahead. Overnight in
Arusha.
This morning, head southwest to Tarangire National Park, known for its towering baobab trees and vast
herds of elephants. The drive takes about 2.5 hours and passes through scenic Maasai country. Enjoy an
afternoon game drive in this beautiful and less crowded park. Tarangire's permanent river draws in
wildlife from all directions during the dry season. Expect to see giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, lions, and
perhaps even leopards hiding in the tall grass.
Depart Tarangire after a morning game drive and head toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. On the way,
stop at Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant town where over 120 tribes live side by side. You'll enjoy a brief cultural
tour and a traditional Tanzanian lunch. Arrive at your lodge near the crater rim in the late afternoon. The
cooler highland air and views over the vast Ngorongoro landscape are breathtaking. Tonight, sleep at
altitude in preparation for tomorrow's descent into the crater.
After breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best
places in Africa to see the Big Five in one day. The crater is home to an estimated 25,000 large animals,
including black rhinos, lions, elephants, and large herds of wildebeest and zebra. Enjoy a full-day game
drive with a picnic lunch near the hippo pool. The scenery here is unique—lush grasslands, acacia
forests, and soda lakes all within the caldera of an ancient volcano. Return to your lodge in the late
afternoon for a peaceful evening in the highlands.
Depart Ngorongoro and drive toward the world-famous Serengeti National Park, stopping en route at
Olduvai Gorge, the archaeological site where some of the earliest human fossils were found. As you
enter the Serengeti, the landscape opens into golden savannahs dotted with acacias. Enjoy game
viewing en route to your camp. Depending on the season, you might see part of the Great Migration,
along with cheetahs, hyenas, and herds of antelope.
Today is dedicated to exploring the Serengeti’s vast plains, riverine areas, and rocky kopjes. Your guide
will tailor the day based on wildlife movements and seasonal highlights, such as the migration or
predator hotspots. With a picnic lunch in the bush, you’ll search for lion prides, leopards lounging in
trees, elephants bathing in mud, and massive herds of grazers moving through the grasslands. The
Serengeti’s scale and density of wildlife never fail to impress.
After breakfast, take a scenic bush flight to Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania’s most remote and
least visited parks. You'll likely land on a dirt airstrip in the middle of nowhere—a true wilderness
experience. Transfer to your lodge and enjoy an afternoon game drive. Katavi is known for its massive
herds of buffalo, large elephant populations, and intense predator action, especially in the dry season
when wildlife congregates near the few remaining water sources.
Spend the day exploring the untouched wilds of Katavi. You’ll see hundreds, sometimes thousands, of
hippos crammed into shrinking waterholes, while crocodiles lurk in nearby rivers. The park offers
excellent chances of seeing lions, leopards, hyenas, and even rare wild dogs. Because so few tourists
visit Katavi, your game drives often feel like you have the entire park to yourself—a photographer’s
paradise and wildlife lover’s dream.
This morning, board a flight to Mahale Mountains National Park, and then take a boat transfer along
Lake Tanganyika, the world’s longest freshwater lake. Your lodge is nestled between the beach and
jungle, with no roads in sight. The atmosphere here is tranquil and magical. Spend the afternoon
relaxing, swimming in the crystal-clear lake, or spotting monkeys and birds around camp. A fireside
dinner under the stars marks the start of your Mahale adventure.
Today, set out on a chimpanzee trek with experienced trackers through the lush Mahale forest. The
terrain is hilly and humid, but the reward is immense: a rare encounter with wild chimpanzees in their
natural habitat. Spend up to one hour observing their interactions—grooming, playing, calling, or
foraging. After the trek, return to camp for a well-deserved lunch and spend the afternoon kayaking or
simply enjoying the peaceful lakefront.
Go on a second trek into the forest, often visiting different chimp families or exploring new trails. Every
trek is different, and the experience of hearing the distant calls or seeing chimps swinging overhead is
unforgettable. After returning to camp, enjoy a relaxed afternoon by the lake. You may also take a short
guided walk to nearby waterfalls or fishing villages, learning more about the local ecosystem and people
who live in this remote corner of Tanzania.
Depart Mahale and fly east to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest national park and a stronghold
for big cats and elephants. After landing, enjoy a game drive en route to your lodge. Ruaha is
characterized by rugged landscapes, ancient baobab trees, and river systems teeming with wildlife. You
may encounter lions hunting, herds of elephants crossing dry riverbeds, or rare antelopes like roan and
sable.
Spend the full day exploring Ruaha’s diverse habitats, from open plains to rocky hills. The park is famous
for its high predator density, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and even African wild dogs. Bird
enthusiasts will love the 500+ bird species here, while photographers will revel in the dramatic light and
terrain. A picnic lunch in the bush allows you to stay out all day, maximizing your chances of memorable
wildlife sightings.
This morning, fly to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) in southern Tanzania. Upon arrival, transfer
to your lodge and prepare for a different safari experience—a boat safari on the mighty Rufiji River.
Cruise past pods of hippos, crocodiles sunning on sandbanks, and elephants drinking from the river's
edge. The river at sunset is spectacular, with golden light, birdlife overhead, and the sounds of Africa
coming alive around you.
On your final safari morning, enjoy a game drive through Nyerere, spotting giraffes, lions, buffalo, and
maybe even the shy sable antelope. The park’s varied landscape makes for beautiful final impressions of
wild Africa. Later, fly back to Arusha, where you’ll connect with your international flight or overnight
depending on your schedule. This marks the end of an epic 15-day journey through the wild heart of
Tanzania—with memories that will last a lifetime.
