  • What to Carry for Your Trip to Uganda?

Packing for a trip is the process of gathering and organizing all necessary items for travel, such as clothes, toiletries, and documents, into a bag or suitcase. It involves making a list based on the trip’s length, destination, and planned activities to ensure you have everything you need without over packing. With Neste Uganda Safaris Ltd, here we go…

Essentials

Valid Passport & Visa
You need a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity. A tourist visa is required for most visitors—this can be applied for online before your trip or on arrival (check current regulations). Travel Insurance Documents: Travel insurance is strongly recommended. It protects you against medical emergencies, lost luggage, or cancellations. Always carry a hard copy and a digital version saved on your phone or email. Vaccination Card (Yellow Fever): Uganda requires proof of Yellow Fever vaccination at entry points. Without it, you may be denied entry or quarantined.

 Clothing

Lightweight, breathable clothing
The climate in Uganda can be warm and humid. Choose clothes made of cotton or linen to stay cool and comfortable. Long-sleeved shirts & trousers: These offer sun protection during the day and help prevent mosquito bites in the evening, especially in rural or forested areas. A light jacket or fleece:
Nights and early mornings, particularly in highland areas like Bwindi or the Rwenzori Mountains, can get cold. A warm layer is useful. Swimwear: Many safari lodges, hotels, and resorts have swimming pools, and some destinations have natural hot springs or lakes. Hat & Sunglasses: The equatorial sun is strong. A wide-brimmed hat protects your face and neck, while sunglasses shield your eyes from glare.

Footwear

Comfortable walking shoes: For nature walks, community visits, or exploring towns, you’ll want closed shoes that are easy to walk in. Hiking boots: If you’re doing gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, or visiting mountainous areas, sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential. Sandals/Flip-flops: These are great for relaxing at your lodge, beach areas, or quick trips around your accommodation.

 Toiletries & Health

Sunscreen (high SPF): Prevent sunburn by using sunscreen daily, especially on game drives or boat trips. Insect repellent (DEET-based): Uganda is a malaria zone. Using repellent helps protect you from mosquito bites and other insects. Hand sanitizer & wet wipes: These are handy for cleaning your hands when soap and water aren’t available, especially during long drives or nature walks. Personal medication: Bring enough of any prescribed medication to last the whole trip, as some medicines may not be available locally. Basic first aid kit: Include items like plasters, antiseptic cream, antihistamines, and painkillers. You’ll be glad to have them in case of minor injuries or discomforts.

Gear & Accessories

Camera or smartphone with a good camera
Uganda’s wildlife, landscapes, and cultural experiences are unforgettable—you’ll want to capture those memories. Binoculars Ideal for birdwatching and spotting distant wildlife on game drives or in national parks. Power bank & chargers: Long days out may mean limited access to power. A power bank ensures your devices stay charged. Universal travel adapter: Uganda uses UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G). If you’re coming from another region, an adapter is essential.

 Miscellaneous

Daypack or small backpack: Perfect for carrying water, snacks, camera, and other essentials during daily excursions or hikes. Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated while reducing plastic waste. Many lodges offer safe drinking water to refill bottles. Snacks for long drives: Safari drives and road trips between parks can be long. Having snacks like energy bars, nuts, or dried fruit keeps you energized. Notebook or journal: Record your experiences, wildlife sightings, and personal reflections from your journey.

In conclusion: proper planning saves you the hustle of carrying what you don’t need, spending more, or missing out on what you need most for a trip.
