Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Goma from Kigali International Airport
Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, our experienced driver guide will warmly welcome you and provide an overview of your 5-day adventure. You’ll then be driven to Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. After enjoying lunch in Goma, explore Lake Kivu with a serene boat cruise and a chance to engage with the local community. End your day with dinner and an overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Community Walk in Virunga National Park
After breakfast, head to the Virunga National Park headquarters for a briefing on ethical Gorilla trekking. Rangers will check your permits at 7:30 am, assign you a Gorilla family, and lead you into the forest. Trekking can take between 1-8 hours, depending on the movement of the Gorillas. Once located, you'll spend an hour observing these magnificent primates as they feed, play, and rest.
In the afternoon, experience a cultural tour, where you'll enjoy local songs, stories, and interactions with the community. Conclude your day with dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 3: Hike Mount Nyiragongo
Fuel up with a hearty breakfast before heading to the base of Mount Nyiragongo by 9:30 am to begin your six-hour ascent. This challenging but rewarding hike offers breathtaking views of Virunga National Park and the surrounding landscape. At the summit, you'll camp overnight and witness the awe-inspiring sight of the active lava lake.
Day 4: Descend and Transfer to Kahuzi-Biega National Park
After breakfast, begin your descent from the summit and return to the base. Take a moment to refresh, and then continue your journey to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, home to the rare and massive Eastern Lowland Gorillas. The drive will showcase stunning views of the lush landscape and rolling hills. Settle into your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5: Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking & Departure
Start your day with a nutritious breakfast, followed by a briefing at the park headquarters. Rangers will share insights into trekking the Eastern Lowland Gorillas, after which your expert guide will lead you into the jungle for an exhilarating trek. These gorillas, larger than their mountain counterparts, are found only in this region. After your encounter, enjoy a picnic lunch before heading back to Kigali for your departure flight.
